Interesting Internet Searches

Recently we had a very informative seminar from a UT student Sandra Benyamin. There were some unusual sites she recommended. As we slow down our travels and have mobility issues we can still see the world.

My favorite is a site called Google Cultural Institute. It is composed of several different modules, like the Art Project, Users Galleries, and World History,

Here is a snapshot of the home page. when you click on the Art Project module, you have the ability to search by gallery, location or artist. As an example I searched for John William Turner. Within seconds they found all the Turners on display in a variety of countries.

You can filter by place, and collection.

Should I Upgrade to Windows 10

Not another article on Windows 10!!! But have any of you attempted the free upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10? I reserved and when the date arrived I just jumped on it so to speak.

Lessons Learned

  1.  It went in quickly over the version of Windows I was running 8.1
  2. I had no, literally no problems.
  3. Installed in 1 1/2 hours.
  4. Everything, all my software, drivers, older software was all up and working. Doing a free upgrade on an eligible current system virtually intact is simple ….. run the tool.
  5. If you did not reserve a copy you have one year to do it for free.
  6. Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool

The media creation tool can be used to upgrade your current PC to Windows 10 or to create a USB or DVD and installWindows 10 on a different PC.

Here’s a quick look at the steps to get Windows 10 installed on your PC using this tool.

    Note

    • If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, select Upgrade this PC now in the tool.

Our IT Tech made a very concise summary for the upgrade. Do you want to install on top of an existing version “dirty” version or do you want to start from scratch or “clean install”. Check our Carl Pingry’s findings. Thanks for the info.

Doing a free clean upgrade on an eligible system can be done two ways:

    1. Do a clean reinstall of the current system and then run the free Win 10 upgrade.
    2. Run the free Win 10 upgrade on the current dirty system then do a reinstall from media of a clean Win 10.
I think #2 is preferable because one doesn’t have to be concerned with finding media, keys, drivers and possible updates for the old system.
Also one might want to run the “dirty” Win 10 for a while to see if the upgrade cleaned up a significant number of the old problems before going through the onerous task of reinstalling your applications.

Honor the Years

Whhonor yearsat better way to honor the years than to self express through your photography and software skills. We recently had a layering class where a silhouette was darkened to almost black, then selected and cut out.

The cutout was saved as a new image with a file format of .png. That allowed the transparency behind her head to show through.

Next we took a busy paper that was stamped and had lettering on it and pasted it as new layer on top of the head.

Once the layer was positioned over the head and hair, erase or mask out certain portions of the letter paper so that we could still see her silhouette.

In the lower portion, we put a quote and cut the opacity to 65%. Honor the Years.

The clock came next, copy, paste as a new layer and cut the opacity. Position if necessary. layer2

Finally , a neutral background was found and placed behind the whole project. I can see this on a birthday card or a get well card.

Managing your medical Information

You need to be prepared for medical emergencies. All of my patient portals, althhealthvault-microsoft1ough helpful to an individual doctor are confusing. I have been looking for one spot to gather all of my information. Julia W. from our lab had the solution.

This class will help you be prepared for a medical emergency or a routine doctor’s visit by teaching you how to manage your medical information using a patient health record system called Microsoft HealthVault. You will learn how to share critical health information, such as allergies and medications, with emergency responders. The course will also cover what mobile applications are available to help you organize and share important medical information, including advance directives, with your doctors.

How Does Music Affect Us

musicEmotionally, socially, mentally, are a few of the adverbs that best describe how we feel about music. It can affect our body as well as our brain and along with that, our productivity. It is a BIG part of our lives without us realizing it.

Because we all spend way more time than we should on our devices, iPads, tablets, phones, our sources for music have changed as well and our devices are our CD players. The options are many for good quality music of our choosing.

The following blog said it best , Belle Beth Cooper and here is her link. It is an excellent read.

https://blog.bufferapp.com/music-and-the-brain

Music is one determinant of our personality and learning a new musical instrument is an excellent method for brain stimulation. Now that we know we NEED music, come to the class that tells you where to find it, how to play it and save it.
This seminar is about listening and streaming music from the internet. There are several very popular apps and programs for your PC and your smartphones for streaming music. Live 365, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio. All of these sites stream all genres of music. You can save it, use it on your TV, plug it into a speaker, or listen to it in the house from your smartphone.
Also we will pair our device with blue tooth speakers in both the car and externally.

There are more websites than ever that offer free music online and it can be a little daunting when you’re looking for some free online music that you can play right now.

These free online music sources all work a little bit differently and all have many different features. You’ll basically find music databases where you can search for an artist or song and listen to it on-demand or online radio stations which work more fluidly. They all have their bells and whistles giving you just what you want.

Tip: Although these websites are all great places to listen to free music online, many are advertised based so you’ll need to listen to ads every once in awhile. There are also sometimes rules on how often you can skip songs within a playlist or radio station. Be sure to read each website’s FAQs to find out all the details.

Who is your favorite contemporary artist? Oldies from the 50’s and 60’s don’t count. I like Ed Sheeran, Luke Bryant, John Legend, Adele, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Armik, and guitar music that I can find.

Using your smartphone

yellow rose  Having a little art background makes me dangerous. I have always been interested in light and the interplay with color but it hasn’t been fun, really fun until I met my smartphone. . Being “older” makes instant gratification a MUST. Take the photo, play with a free app, download or upload and VOILA!   Five minutes while you are waiting for the coffee pot to make your one cup of coffee.

There are a lot of reasons for owning a phone, calling people, texting long distance to the family, staying involved in your friend community, using a magnifier, maps, finding bathrooms and gas stations and making art creations out of your photos.

As the phones replace our point and shoots, you need to get more familiar with how the camera works, the possibility for exposure, focus, contrast, and post editing. The app stores are loaded with options. Overwhelming? I’ll say!

If you need help one on one help, with a calendar, your phone list, taking a photo, storage, using the music features, come and see us. Both platforms, iPhones and Androids are welcome. Check out the calendar for dates and times.

I took the photo above with the app Camera Awesome from SmugMug. Great for locking in focus and exposure. I post processed in Photo Viva. Available for both iOS and Android. If you check out there website at the app store, they have helpful hints on the painting. photoviva Remember after using the paint strokes, use the copy feature to blend in the brush strokes. You also can brush away unwanted strokes.

Time to go swimming and get outside on this beautiful day. See you in class.
